Potterism !

Post Posted: Thu Jul 26, 2007 3:51 pm

I have a cousin in New Delhi. He is in 10th standard. I once accidently started talking about Harry Potter and I noticed that he is MAD about him!
This madness is, I think, nonsense. I am not against the reading habbit as such but I think this is no more just a book but an addiction like video games.

I think a boy of his age must be matured and should not behave like a kid ! He had been waiting for the book for months !
Howsoever good the book might be but this harry potter has made several young sharp minds blunt.

hey... i think 10th std. does not needs you to be matured and you talk of maturity???!! i think even you (or me) are not mature enough by looking at the drivel schemes, we usually plan. i don't think having a an obsession at an age like this, is bad. at least, the kid is not hurting anyone or himself . it doesn't matter, if any kid is excited about anything ( or to be more precise, overexcited about anything). 10th std. is usually like that and you are not really mature enough at that point of time.

moreover, the story is an interesting one (although, i m not really a potter fan), if you follow whole series. j k rowling has actually mastered the art of "putting up suspense" very efficiently and she has used it well.

i think, reading fiction does not makes any sharp mind blunt. after all, people were also mad about characters like sherlock holmes, hardy boys, nancy drew then there was also sydney sheldon, charcters like huckel bery finn, tom sawyer and we should never forget swami and friends by rk narayan, mowgli from jungle book. the point here is MEDIA.in recent times, media has actually become over obsessive about all the surroundings we have and potter series is no exception.

and about kids... they will always be equally excited and obsessive about the all the good things that bring joys to life because THEY ARE KIDS...RIGHT?? and ur cuz...... at least he did stood in a que for whole night like briton kids. u don't need to make scapegoat out of him.

I too dont think that reading fiction novels makes a sharp mind blunt. its a good habit...I mean atleast they are getting the habit of reading....which is actually a very good habit, helps to increase your vocab etc...but you shouldn't be over-obsessed with anything.....even if its Mr.potter.But yeah Imran,a student in class tenth should be mature enough...cummon,being in tenth standard means that you are big enough to be mature.you are not supposed to behave like a kid in tenth class....do you?

I personally would not blaming your cousin at all Mohsin. Call it Rowling's luck or whatever something as stupid as this is probably the Best Seller of all times.

Even adults waited for the whole night outside the bookshops just to get the first copy.

Talking of maturity, forget it. At the best he would be 16! I personally never got the habit of reading except the newspaper of course. I played the first game that was out on my rather antique PS1 and watched a movie or two, but that is all about the spell that Rowling's unusual characters could cast on me. So let the child enjoy it if he wishes to. As for becoming blunt, he should realize that this craze should not come into the path of his studies. If he maintains the balance he surely is not becoming Blunt!

The fact here is that, how mature a kid as old as 15, will be. We can not expect his level of maturity to be as developed as us the 19 year olds. He is in to an age, where video games and fictions are big deal but, yes if you meant that he should be bit serious about other things like studies, i will agree.

There is difference between maturity and seriousness. Anyway, i think we discussed enough on this drivel topic. let the kid have his fantasies. after all, each one of us has their very own set of fantasies

hey mohsin ..have you ever read any harry potter book...your views on it makes me think NO ..anyone who has read harry potter will at least not say anything about it like this ..it may be possible that some people dont like it as much as others do but still a book mus t have something in it if it can make the author one of the richest persons in the world and if it was so sick as Mohsin has described it no director would spend as much money as the directors of warner bros have spend and that not only one director but three or four directors have made movies on the different books.but then this is a free world you can have a say in anything you want.

Dont take this so serious yaaaar..

I think you are bang on target Tariq. I know it sounds weird that people of the age of even 30-40 or even more read this book. But if they can why not the children?

@ Tariq: Welcome to the forums. I see you have posted once earlier but would surely love to see more of you! Very Happy

Oops !!
We have some biggest Potter maniac here at RadoPOD too !!
@ Tariq
I have read two Harry potter books both of them were very interesting but that doesnt vindicate the 'Mania' for this round bespectacled guy. I have played some video games that really makes me go crazy but as soon as I realize that this is becoming an addiction, I try to run away from it. and I think thats a good decision, cuz that may excite me for some time but is not at all going to be fruitful in long term and may also make me MANIAC like few on radopod ! Wink
In a single sentence i would say
DONT LET ANYTHING DOMINATE OVER YOURSELF !!
Like if one is not having meals in order to finish the book.
Anything to say, guys. I think that is enough. BADE HO JAO BACHHE Wink

Welllll, all i have to say is that i salute all the potter fans, the reason being that i really appreciate people who can complete those lengthy novels with great ease! I, personally haven't been able to inculate that habit within me in my childhood and i quite regret it now. I feel that reading itself is a good habit, be it factual or fiction. According to me, reading fiction develops the imagination as one is exposed to various 'impossibilities'. So, hats off to all you potter maniacs there! Very Happy

Guess who we have here! The ghosts from past seem to be alive and kicking again. lol! Very Happy

Returning to the topic I too have not been able to have that habit of 'READING' all my life. So much so that I even hate reading my course book at times. I am however willing to listen to some casette or something like that of the book because that according to me is the closest I can go to geting to know more about this Wizard!

Breake the rules is what Potter teaches the kids. What if Ur younger brother do something which can be dangerous to him and harm himself, will U be impressed by his break the rule attitude....
Do you still doff Ur hats to him, haan??

Hey that is a good point. The assertion of yours saying 'It make sharp minds blunt' in my opinion was vague. But this one is surely debatable. To the best of my knowledge Harry always breaks rules and with his sheer good luck survives and is lauded by all.

I will think about it a bit more but at first glance I am not impressed by this lesson being sent out far and wide by the author!

Wel,"breaking the rules" is certainly not a good message. But,you have to see the perspective in which it is being done. Now,say,USA has put a number of countries under various sanctions which stifles their basic fundamental rights...it is a sort of rule there.Would you not like to break a rule like that??All the rules that Harry Potter breaks are for some good or the other. And he doesn't survive by sheer luck.He survives because there is a certain GOOD force protecting him....he's saved by his inherent goodness.
I am not a die-hard Potter fan,but I have read all these books except the last one and I really like the "Victory of good over evil" message that it conveys.Any comments, critics??
