Bajaj clarified to the best of my knowledge that the car isn't going to be that cheap.
@Imran
what would you choose Mr Imran, hp laptop or the car?
hmm.... good question. Nano is a few months away from its commercial launch and I desperately need a new laptop. So I think I will stick to the laptop for now!

Just in case both of you did not realize this car isn't being released to make become something that will define your class! It is genuine attempt by this down to earth Tata guy to take those 6 people sitting on a scooter and throw them into a car(WOW and a beautiful car at that!) If you want to set standards head over and get a Ferrari, Bentley or something similar!
Don't understand the reason for that assertion Viper. Just seems to come out of the blue. There are some good 'aunties' racing and passionate about cars so that assertion of yours simply stands nullified.

The auto expo has begun and I am starting this topic both to provide news and discuss on the different models !!
Lets start with dicussing about the
TATA NANO
Nano spectacle attracts big numbers
(IANS)
For the 200,000 visitors at the Auto Expo 2008, Hall Number 11 is invariably the first halt, to see the little Tata Nano that has raised aspirations of millions who now see themselves soon owning a car.
With a snub nose, a sloping roof and just about room for five to squeeze in, the world's cheapest car at the Tata Motors Pavilion at Pragati Maidan here has got everything which people could possibly ask for in a car at the price of just Rs.100,000 ($2,500).
Nano, according to industry research organisation Crisil, may bring 65 percent more families into the ambit of those who can now afford a car.
"It is a record for the Auto Expo. On Saturday, it was 160,000 and by 12 p.m. the figure hit the 180,000-mark just within 2 hours," said Gurpal Singh, deputy director general of industry body Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), one of the organisers of the show.
The pavilion had to be closed for almost 2 hours to control the rush. "The crowd is anything but nano," said a Tata official.
The Indian Trade Promotion Organisation has asked CII to shift one exhibit of the Nano to the Lal Chowk theatre, which will make it easier for the organisers to tackle the crowd.
The Tata team had in fact doubled the temporary staff at their pavilion for the Sunday rush. They have also put up emergency units outside the pavilion.
It's almost the same story at the CII information booths. "The query begins and ends with the Nano," said an executive.
But it is not just Delhiites who are thronging the venue. A huge number of tourists, including many first timers, have changed their tour schedule to catch a glimpse of the Tata car.
"I don't care about the car necessarily but I wanted to take a moment and celebrate the awesomeness that is the word 'lakh'. It means 100,000 and it is what Indians use to express a big number the way we use million," said American Keetsa Mattress who managed to squeeze her way through to crowd to the Nano turntable.
And many like South Korean Jimmy Yep agreed Nano would change the way the world looks at developing countries.
"The Tata Nano is a microcosm and instructive example of the very real growth and poverty problems facing India and China and the reaction of environmentalists who want to restrict their growth in the name of global warming," he said.
The response to Tata's small wonder is mega but its actual test will be once it is out on the roads to be experienced by the common man.
As Ratan Tata put it, "The final judgment will be made by the consumer. Let's wait and let them decide."

Haven't yet found the courage to fight my way into the Tata pavilion. But a classmate of mine did visit it and he was really appreciative of the Nano. This car could(will) spark a Revolution!

Yeah nano has become biggest attraction of auto expo 08' bringing whole India at one place which has caused lot of inconvenience to automobile freaks like me to have a close look.
Though the car has been launched it will take long time to hit the Indian roads. It is expected to be out in market by October.

Bookings start off in June. The only problem is that with only 2.5 Lakh cars due to hit Indian roads the possibility of black marketing is huge. It will be interesting to see how Tatas combat this. Its been a day of Tata praising as far as I am concerned, but I know they will pull it off!

Nano will definetly bring down the sales of Maruti 800 and alto which is ruling the Indian Market in lower segment.

In addition to what blakviper said, it is obvious that the two wheeler companies are about to get the shock of their lives. Bajaj Auto and company need to buckle up for this storm which is anything but 'nano'!

Just on a side note, I have been looking with awe at the price of this car in US $ i.e. 2500$!
Now to put this into perspective, I have been looking at Laptop prices(HP) on the internet(US Prices). Now a decent enough 17" laptop comes for about 2500 or so Dollars. So you are the one who makes the final choice. Get this beautiful Car or a laptop when both cost the same! Amazing indeed!

Oh come on Imran think about the CAR !!!
WRROOOOOOMMM..
ur own car... Just think about it, a CCC (Cool Compact Car) ! U must be having a desktop right now and that must be serving pretty well(otherwise U wudnt be maintaining so well a bulky site like this one)..
Just Give another thought, man !!
And as far as the prices of the new cheap cars are concerned, as Imran said that The Bajaj has clarified that the car is not going to be that cheap.
This is where Mr. RATAN TATA beats his competitor.. as he said at the launch of NANO that he never promised a 1 lac car !!
He never said that its gona be a one lac car at the time of launch, it was estimated to be of 1 lac then but due to the increase in prices the cost of the car must go higher than that but but but...
Mr. TATA took it as challenge and determined to build the TAGGED 1 LAC CAR and that too with the same profit he was having.. and after smart and worthy work of 500 engineers he kept his promise and blessed India a 1 Lac car !!
Thumbs Up to Mr. Ratan Tata

At once, the prospect sounds very promising: Every Indian can afford to buy his own Nano and enjoy its ride. Also, the fact that the Nano has a cute, charming look, when compared to our age-old Maruti 800, it would be nice to have our roads filled with the new wonder's replicas! But for how long? I mean, how long would it take for the Nano to become the next Maruti?
It's human nature to get driven towards something that's unconventional, out of the world. Nano will have this appeal for a limited duration, after which it will become monotonous! Mobile phones were once a craze. Now, thanks to Reliance, everyone has one! I'm not talking about creating an economic divide between the rich and the poor, but there sure needs to be some difference, if we don't wish to render money meaningless.
Also, as all the environmentalists are dreaded, the increasing pollution from the cars would spark a tremendous amount of global warming, prevention of which has, in the recent history, become the most important goal for the entire world. Advancement in the true sense would have been if the Tatas would have brought out a car that would be environmental-friendly and consumer-friendly at the same time. Making a "Janata's car" that would rake in millions for the company is no social service!!
Nano...No No from my side!!

Initially even i thought of getting nano for me as its a city car, fuel efficient, and more or less a student car. But my dad is not to get one for me though he has agreed to get an alto instead. Its because on weekends i usually go to my hometown which 65km away from my college and the highway is the most deadliest in India not because of the roads but BUSES.
Im sure nano wont be stable on highways as compared to 800 or alto as it is lighter than the rest and has more tendency to drift off.
When Nano comes out it will be common on roads and definetly loose its value. And it wont be fun to drive it as compared to other cars!
@Miss Rooma
Well for Ladies and Aunties Nano chalta hain as its a light car and short they can easily park on big parking lots. And passion of cars are only in the blood of guys not aunties!
